Safe Kayaking Checklist

To ensure you have fun and an enjoyable time, it is worth taking the time to brush up on some advice provided from the NSW Dept. of Lands.

Before you go...

Always check the river levels BEFORE your trip.
Daily river levels are available on
www.waterinfo.nsw.gov.au
* Always let someone know your trip plans and if using a support vehicle, ensure the driver is aware of your intended rendezvous point and how to get there.

* Ensure you are proficient in handling your craft in calm waters before taking on the challenge of rapids.

* For extended trips,  GPS coordinates have been supplied to help you locate the reserves. Set up your GPS for the GDA datum and enter the coordinates of the reserve in advance.

* Ensure you have enough fuel, food and water for the trip - even a little extra wont hurt - you never know what can happen.

Safety Gear...

* A high visibility Personal Flotation Device (PDF)  type 2 with a whistle attached should be worn at all times on the water.

* Hat, sun glasses and sun screen.

* Spare paddle and repair kit.

* Map, compass and GPS

* Adequate drinking water and food for 5-8 hours.

* A first aid kit and basic knowledge of CPR

* Waterproof containers for food and warm/dry clothing.

* Appropriate footwear for water and rocks.

* All craft should have fixed buoyancy with securing loops at each end.

* A rope or throwline should be carried for rescuing purposes.

On The River...

* Make sure you have all of your gear when you set off especially if the river flow is too strong to paddle back upstream.

* Avoid travelling alone and stay in contact with the others in your group.

* Be alert for hazardous overhanging and submerged trees and branches.

* If you capsize, hang onto the craft until you can breach safely. If the water is extremely cold, then leave the craft and head for the shore immediately.

* If unsure of the water conditions ahead, disembark the craft and check on foot.

* On hot days only paddle early in the morning or later in the afternoon to prevent heat stroke.

* Mobile phone reception on the river may not be reliable.

* To fish in NSW waters, you must pay a fee and carry a receipt.
